A CLEAR, SIMPLE WORKFLOW

How to use PDF to Markdown

Step 01

Choose the PDF to extract

Upload a PDF up to 10 MB and 50 pages, or open the sample to see a report with lists and a table. Use an unlocked copy that you are authorized to read; password-protected files need to be unlocked beforehand.

Step 02

Check reading order and figures

Review the live Markdown editor, rendered GFM tables and LLM token count. Compare the beginning of each column, every financial row and any code example with the PDF, correcting a misplaced label before it reaches your notes or prompt.

Step 03

Download the reviewed transcript

Save the Markdown or copy selected sections into your research workflow. Digital text is extracted on a temporary server whose job files are deleted; image-only PDFs use browser OCR after page images are prepared.

CONTENT WITH INTEGRITY

Formatting fidelity, explained

A digital PDF can contain selectable words without carrying a dependable document outline. Differences in text size and emphasis help recover likely headings, while the editor lets you correct an overpromoted caption or a section whose title spans several lines.

Multi-column pages are read in a logical sequence where the layout allows it. Sidebars, footnotes and illustrations can interrupt that sequence, so verify a passage that begins in one column and ends near another before quoting it as continuous prose.

Bullet characters, numbered procedures and indented supporting points are represented as Markdown lists. Monospaced code receives a fenced block when recognized, protecting literal examples from the line wrapping and emphasis rules used for ordinary narrative text.

Table extraction aims to preserve the relationship between a column heading and its values. Repeated labels and empty cells can be meaningful, especially in budgets; compare subtotals and a few source rows rather than judging accuracy from a neat-looking preview alone.

PDF is often the final presentation of a document, so recovering editable text involves interpretation. A page may mix selectable text with scanned content, decorative lines or a chart that has no underlying data table. Treat the Markdown as a working transcript, retain the original for verification, and add a citation to any passage used in research. The converter does not reconstruct an unseen spreadsheet or infer figures hidden inside a photograph.

For a long evidence pack, headings and consistent tables make the extracted material easier to divide into useful context for an LLM. Compare the token estimate before and after removing repeated notices, but keep qualifications and source references that affect a claim. A modest amount of review is especially valuable for statement periods, minus signs, parenthesized losses and narrow columns, because one misplaced character can reverse the meaning of an otherwise readable financial summary.

THE DETAILS THAT MATTER

Frequently asked questions

How can PDF heading levels be inferred without an outline?

A PDF without bookmarks may still distinguish its titles through relative text size, weight and spacing. Those clues help suggest a Markdown outline, but a large quotation or running title can resemble a heading. Review the headings in the visual preview, compare section starts with the original pages, and adjust hash levels where the inferred hierarchy does not match the author’s intended organization.

Why do some PDFs need OCR instead of text extraction?

A digital PDF stores actual text characters that a reader can select; a scan stores a picture of those characters. A PDF without selectable text automatically continues through OCR in your browser after temporary page rendering. Mixed documents can contain both readable text and image-only pages: heed conversion warnings and review those scanned pages separately rather than assuming their words were extracted. Recognition quality depends on resolution, contrast and language support, so check names, symbols and numbers.

Will columns and page footers remain in the output?

The converter attempts to put text columns into reading order and remove recurring top or bottom labels. It cannot always distinguish a useful repeated heading from a decorative footer, particularly in irregular layouts. Check several page boundaries and any sidebar that interrupts an argument. If a passage is out of order, rearrange it in the editor rather than assuming its visual position was a reliable reading instruction.

How should I check a financial table after PDF extraction?

Compare each extracted column with its source heading, then read several complete rows from left to right. Confirm currency symbols such as ₹ and $, decimal places, negative signs and numbers shown in parentheses; those details can change a result’s meaning. Recalculate or compare the reported totals against the PDF, and inspect empty cells so a missing value has not shifted the following amount into another column.
