HTML files and pasted markup convert in your browser. Fetch URL retrieves a public article through a temporary server.

A CLEAR, SIMPLE WORKFLOW

How to use HTML to Markdown

Step 01

Provide an HTML source

Upload an HTML or HTM file, paste an article fragment, or select Fetch URL for a public page. Prefer the main article content when you can, leaving menus, cookie notices and unrelated recommendations out of the input.

Step 02

Compare the cleaned article

Check headings, links, nested lists and GFM tables in the live Markdown editor and preview. Watch the LLM token count as you remove navigation noise, and preserve the source URL or author details needed for a useful citation.

Step 03

Copy or save the readable version

Export Markdown for your documentation or research notes after reviewing the article’s structure. File and paste conversion stays local; the URL option uses temporary server retrieval and deletes conversion files when processing has finished.

CONTENT WITH INTEGRITY

Formatting fidelity, explained

Visible article structure is more useful than the page’s decorative markup. Heading elements, paragraphs, quotations and lists become readable Markdown, while scripts and interactive controls are excluded so a saved article does not carry its original browsing interface into your notes.

HTML table cells are expanded into rectangular rows where the format permits it. Spanning cells and multiple paragraphs need a simpler representation in GFM, so inspect comparison matrices and tables that rely on several levels of visual header grouping.

Links retain useful destinations alongside their labels, making a research excerpt easier to trace. A downloaded fragment may contain relative paths that need the original page location to resolve, so keep that location available when checking citations or preparing a published copy.

The URL option retrieves publicly accessible article content rather than running a complete logged-in browser session. Dynamic application screens, paywalls and pages requiring private cookies may not supply an extractable article, even when the page looks readable in your own browser.

Copying a complete website often adds far more navigation than evidence. Starting with the article element or another focused fragment gives you less noise to remove and makes the token counter a more meaningful guide to the text you plan to share. Keep captions that explain a result and discard only material that is genuinely unrelated. A disclaimer placed near the article may be necessary context even if it looks like part of the surrounding page design.

HTML to Markdown is also useful when moving help-center content into a repository or turning an internal export into an editable draft. Review heading levels after conversion because websites sometimes use headings for visual styling rather than document hierarchy. Tables should be checked for hidden labels, empty fields and merged headings. The converter makes the available text portable; it does not grant permission to republish a source or establish that an online statement is accurate.

THE DETAILS THAT MATTER

Frequently asked questions

Can pasted HTML execute JavaScript during conversion?

Pasted HTML is treated as document content, not as a script to run. The converter and preview remove executable markup and restrict elements such as embedded frames and forms. That helps you inspect the text without recreating the source site’s behavior. Still review the resulting links and wording before sharing, because cleaning markup does not establish the trustworthiness or ownership of the content itself.

Why does a live URL need a separate fetch path?

A browser cannot freely retrieve every other site’s article, and a URL needs additional checks before a server connects to it. Fetch URL uses a protected temporary retrieval path for public web content, including checks on addresses and redirects. File upload and paste do not require that retrieval step. Pages behind authentication or heavy client-side interfaces may need a saved HTML export instead.

What happens to HTML tables and nested lists?

Ordinary HTML tables become GFM pipe tables, with line breaks inside cells represented without splitting one record into several Markdown rows. Nested lists preserve their relative indentation where the source describes a genuine hierarchy. Row and column spans can flatten into repeated or simplified values, so inspect grouped headers and make them explicit if a reader could otherwise confuse which value belongs to which category.

Should I paste a whole web page or an article fragment?

Paste the main article fragment when you have access to it and want a focused result. An entire page can also work, but it may add a navigation tree, footer text and promotional material that you will need to remove. Include any caption, author line or source note that affects interpretation, then use the preview to confirm the cleaned text still stands on its own.
